Embroidery, a brilliant pearl in Chinese art, can be dated back to Neolithic age. In ancient times, embroidery was an elegant task for ladies who were forbidden to go out of their homes. Because of the good quality of silk, most Chinese fine embroideries are made with it. From the magnificent Dragon Robes of emperors to today’s fashions, embroidery adds a great deal of pleasure to our culture and our life. The modern Chinese silk embroidery still prevails in southern China. Some Chinese minority groups also have their own style of embroidery, which usually depicts a mythical or religious topic.
Chinese people began to make spirits with grains seven thousand years ago. Generally speaking，wine has a close connection with culture in China in both ancient and modern times. Chinese wine culture has been playing a quite important role in Chinese people's life for a long time. Our Chinese ancestors used wine to enjoy themselves while writing poetry, or to make a toast to their relatives and friends during a feast. Wine culture, as a kind of culture form, is also an inseparable part in the life of ordinary Chinese people through numerous events such as birthday party, farewell dinner, wedding, etc.
Peking opera is a traditional art in China. It is a kind of Chinese opera which was born when the Four Great Anhui Troupes came to Beijing in 1790, arose in the mid-19th century and was extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty. Peking opera is widely regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China. Although it is called Beijing opera, its origins are in the Chinese provinces of Anhui and Hubei. Beijing opera was originally staged for the court and came into the public later. Hundreds of years ago, as a new style of drama, wherever they have been performed, they would be warmly welcomed. Unfortunately, in the modern world, traditional operas including Peking Opera have to face the existential crisis, because they are not easily accepted by younger generations.
Kunqu Opera is said to be the mother of all Chinese operas. Its origins can be traced to the late Yuan Dynasty, in the lower Yangtze River Valley. Kunqu Opera is acknowledged as an elegant opera in terms of music, recitation, and the performers' movements and soft singing. Carrying forward the tradition of ancient poetry and story, the art is also of very high literary value. It has exerted a dominant influence on the forms of opera in China, including the Sichuan and Beijing operas. In 2001, UNESCO proclaimed Kunqu Opera as a masterpiece of Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Shadow play is one of China’s traditional folk arts. During a shadow play performance, performers hide themselves behind a white curtain and control puppets, while also narrating the story through folk song. Performances are generally accompanied by playing drums and stringed instruments. Similar to Peking Opera, characters are clearly defined. Shadow play, with distinctive folklore styles, had long been one of entertainment forms in Chinese villages till two decades ago. But this ancient art is gradually disappearing due to the impact of modern media such as television and movies. Fortunately, shadow play is still alive and warmly welcomed among people in some rural areas in China. Chinese shadow play has been staged in Europe and the United States in recent years.
